Hobson officially began in 2002.
Alex Breyer previously worked with such Cincinnati bands as Bingo Smith, the Jackdaws, and Night Kitchen. Brett Tritsch played drums with the punk rock band Bessemer out of Milwaukee around Marquette University.
After meeting in a failed emo-core project with Matt Fry (now of the Insect Clicks), Brett and Alex started playing loud rock together in a rotting office building in one of Cincinnati's forgotten neighborhoods. The perfect setting for creating angst-filled pop. This went on and off for more than a year.
Brett took a year off to study drumming at the Los Angeles Musicians Academy (LAMA). In that time, Alex stretched his chops by studying bass under jazz pro Joe Policastro. The two reunited, adding bassist Ryan Harrell to make a full power trio.
All the pieces fit well. A strong appreciation for older bands like The Who, Kinks, and the Beatles laid the foundation to making music that sounds more contemporary, like the Pixies or Flaming Lips.
